Functional Medicine
Functional medicine takes a more personalized, holistic approach to your health and wellness than what we’re used to seeing practiced in traditional, Western medicine. Rather than just treating individual symptoms, Functional Medicine dives deep into your body as a whole. It’s all about understanding your unique body, your lifestyle, and how everything interacts to affect your health.
You are more than just a collection of symptoms. You are a unique, individual person with your own way of living your life. This needs to be taken into consideration if we’re going to figure out what’s really going on with your health. This approach helps us figure out what’s really going on beneath the surface, addressing the root causes of diseases rather than just the surface issues.
With Functional Medicine, we move away from outdated acute-care models currently being practiced in much of the world and instead become detectives dedicated to truly unraveling the causes of chronic disease and illness. Not only that…you don’t have to wait for problems to arise. Functional Medicine allows you to be proactive and take an active role in supporting your health and wellness (and preventing disease from arising in the future).
How is functional medicine different?
Functional Medicine takes a more holistic and patient-centered approach to your health and wellness and seeks to address your health issues from the root. Here’s how.
It looks for root causes for illness rather than addressing individual symptoms
It takes a more holistic approach to your health rather than treating each system of the body separately
Patient-centered care.
It integrates the best medical practices from both Western and Eastern medicine
Functional medicine integrates traditional Western medical practices with what are sometimes considered alternative” or integrative” medicine, creating a focus on prevention through nutrition, diet, and exercise; use of the latest laboratory testing and other diagnostic techniques; and prescribed combinations of drugs and/or botanical medicines, supplements, therapeutic diets, detoxification programs, or stress-management techniques. It has an integrative, science-based healthcare approach.
Functional medicine practitioners look upstream” to consider the complex web of interactions in the patient’s history, physiology, and lifestyle that can lead to illness. The unique genetic makeup of each patient is considered, along with both internal (mind, body, and spirit) and external (physical and social environment) factors that affect total functioning.
