Unexplained Infertility

Unexplained infertility is discussed often in our office. Many couples come in frustrated that they do not have a diagnosis for their fertility struggles. A diagnosis of unexplained infertility is given to about 25% of couples with infertility. When we see this in our office we actually think this is a positive situation. Many times it is more difficult to address endometriosis or poor ovarian reserve then it is address the possible issues surrounding unexplained infertility.

Many times it could be as simple as a nutritional deficiency, regulating sleep patterns, low cervical mucous, inaccurate timing of sexual intercourse or a pre-existing health issue. Many of the consultations we do involve couples who are given a diagnosis of unexplained infertility, yet they also have other health issues: poor dietary and lifestyle.

Here are some causes for unexplained infertility that we see at Reproductive Wellness:

  • Thyroid issues

  • Very low body weight

  1. Hello. I am one progesterone test away from an “unexplained fertility” diagnosis. Everything so far has been normal. Sperm analysis, HSG, and my blood work looks good except for one thing….prolactin came back at 35…my OBGYN wasn’t even going to tell me, he says that is negligible, (I had seen it myself in my lab work and brought it up) …he said it wasn’t even something he would have brought up to me…but everything I have read says that’s plenty enough to mess things up!!! I had it tested back in January too, for another reason, and it was 9 then…not sure how it got so high in 6 months time but after the initial elevated test I asked my endocrinologist about it and she said she would restart it for me ..it came back at 34. That was a few days later. Then she asked me about what I had been taking, and I told her Zoloft 25 mg (which is super low dose) and vitex (none of my docs even knew what this was) …she asked me to stop the vitex and re-test in a month. If it’s still up they will do the MRI for prolactinoma I guess. I just wondered, is there any way it could be the vitex ? I feel like there’s no way because vitex is supposed to HELP prolactin!! I am just wondering if this prolactin thing is something that could be messing me up with trying to conceive…all of my other hormones are totally normal and I’ve never missed a period in my life. I do feel like some of them have been lighter in the past year or so.
